Please, let this be true.

Agreed on both counts. If the current 6 had the updated interior of the 3, I would buy one this year . BUT an inline 6 and RWD would be even better assuming they don’t go wonky on the styling.

Also, lol at this line in the linked article:
With Toyota’s budget, Mazda engineers could probably welcome Elon Musk to Mars with a locally sourced shrimp buffet.

It’s about money, if they have to retool their platforms anyway and its more cost effective to make I4/I6 engines with fewer transmissions...then they might. If not they they wont. They wouldn’t do it just because it would be cool/

I so so so want this to be true. They offer an I6 and RWD in a (presumably) affordable large sedan with great driving dynamics? Of course we won’t get a wagon or a third pedal but I want this to be a success so they can afford lower volume variants.

What an incredible turn of events that would be for the 6.

interesting - wonder if it’s a chassis share with that new Toyota rwd thing they have been working on. Just as long as the Mazda folks tune the suspension and steering...

But they killed the manual? Who will sell me a RWD, manual transmission car with space for four people? WHO?

I dunno, the entire RX-8 was predicated on cool factor
![]() 04/13/2020 at 16:52 |

The RX-8 was snuck into production by the skin of its teeth by a skunkworks team of hardcores.

Exactly. There is precedent

W hy do the best cars always come out during Great Depressions?

The reward for the board approving the RX-8 was lackluster sales and no follow- up. Something tells me the precedent is NOT in the favor of the engineers this time.

Can the 3 series still be had with a manual?

C&D originally dropped the
I6/RWD Mazda6 story
almost a year ago (11 months). It’s from an
investor presentation
that’s still available on Mazda’s own website. Here’s a screenshot of the relevant slide:
No explicit mention of RWD, but the combination of a longitudinal engine and a I6 would make a FWD drive train highly unlikely. At this point, I think it’s more of a question of whether Mazda can survive the current economic climate than of whether or not they intend to build a I6/RWD car.
The next crucial question is whether that I6/RWD vehicle is a sedan or a crossover...

Yes (I think)
You can get a M3 manual

I think as of now, or as of soon you can only have them on the M cars, not that I mind.

Where can I find one with a warranty/new?
![]() 04/13/2020 at 17:47 |

2017 would still have their powertrain warranty...

If the 6 goes RWD, then I can see them using that same platform for the MX5 and the CX-9
And I was thinking... why would Toyota want another RWD car... don’t they already have the JV with BMW and Subaru? What don’t they have covered?
And I think the answer is the Lexus IS. It may be that a RWD Mazda 6 shares a platform with the next-gen Lexus IS.
